about

recently, i was magically transported into the lush, murmuring Gullah landscape photography of THEE Carrie Mae Weems as part of her Sea Islands photo series in the Spirit in the Land exhibit. The piece called Ebo Landing moved me into this deep, hypnotic water song that is this track. the first part is story the second is a water spell.

lyrics

one midnight

at high tide

a cargo carrying Ebo Ibo men landed

at [so called] Dunbar’s Creek

on the Gullah Geeche Island of [so called] St.Simon’s.

But the men refused to be sold into slavery.

they joined hands

together and turned back towards the water chanting

‘the water brought us, the water will take us away’.

they all drowned. but to this day

when the breeze sighs through the marshes

and through the trees, you can hear the clank of chains

an echo of their chant

at Ebo Landing....

‘the water brought us, the water will take us away’.
