about

Thunderstorm Can Sing"
by Cooper John Uglow

A loud, improvised ode to Nature's emphatic rejuvenating ritual, on a single electric guitar tuned to open A (with the E string dropped to low A). This performance was recorded; and is presented, as a single take with no over-dubbing techniques or structural edits. The sound levels were so high that at times the recording microphone distorted on its own, adding to the vivacious spirit of the recording. This piece was performed with African-American guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix, Eddie Hazel, and Sonny Sharrock in mind, borrowing heavily from their respective elemental approaches to the instrument. Through a highly overdriven amp with reverb and wah-wah effects, we hear squalling winds, metallic gray skies, falling trees, torrential rain, and rolling thunder passing over us as the storm bellows across the land and sky. Two-thirds of the way through the recording, a reference to Queen's "Bohemian Rhapsody" can be heard, recalling the lyrical lines "anyway the wind blows" and "thunder bolts and lightning," further speaking to the regal presence of the storm and the rhapsodic nature of its sounds. This piece offers us the questions: In what ways does Mother Nature communicate and what might she have to say?
